Francis trained at Wimbledon School of Art.


His designs for theatre and opera have been seen nationally and internationally.


Recent theatre includes : Romeo and Juliet (Singapore); The Weir (Lyceum, Edinburgh); Big Maggie (Gaiety, Dublin); The Importance of Being Earnest (Gate, Dublin, Spoleto Festival Charleston); Kiss Me Kate (Dortmund); Talking Heads (Bath & touring); Oklahoma (national tour); Druid Shakespeare (Druid, Galway & Lincoln Centre, New York) - for whom he has previously designed many productions, seen in Ireland, London and New York, including The Beauty Queen of Leenane on Broadway; The Price, An Ideal Husband (Gate, Dublin); Aristocrats (Abbey, Dublin); Private Lives (Edinburgh).

Productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company include : Loves Labours Lost; Midsummer Night’s Dream; Lieutenant of Innishmore;  Written on The Heart.

Also ‘Loserville’ (Leeds and West End); ’Cat On A Hot Tin Roof’ (Leeds)


Recent opera includes : ; Fanciulla del West; Eugene Onegin; Samson and Delila; Peter Grimes (Grange Park);   Orfeo and Euridice (Buxton Festival);  Vert, Vert (Garsington);  Noyes Fludde (Lowestoft); Rusalka (Nürnberg, Monte Carlo); The Adventures of Pinocchio (Opera North, Bonn, Moscow); and many more in the UK, Germany, Switzerland and North America.

Awards include 2 Irish Times Theatre Awards, Boston Globe and Critics Circle Awards. His designs for the opera Pinocchio nominated for Germany’s ‘ Der Faust' Prize, and nominated for the President’s Design award for Romeo and Juliet; in Singapore.


Future work includes Leonore (Buxton Festival); Waiting for Godot (Druid, Ireland); Beauty Queen of Leenane (Ireland, Los Angeles, New York); Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Lyceum, Edinburgh); Don Giovanni (Nederlandse Reisopera); Il Turco in Italia (Garsington).
